Current Research on Radioecological Safety Crime as a Phenomenon

Extended Abstract. The article presents an analysis of scientifi c research practices which are focused on such an issue as radioecological safety crime. It is argued that academic interest in the radioecological (nuclear and radiation) safety issues stems from the enormous and undeniable positive results of the use of nuclear and radiation technologies, as well as from the pertaining risks of possible damage which could be equally large-scale. The phenomenon under study is distinguished as an autonomous type of crime on the basis of the relevant area of social relations, since the phenomena and processes occurring in the fi eld of radioecological safety, taken together and in their interaction, aff ect the shaping of determining factors, and, consequently, directly or indirectly determine the phenomenon of criminal behavior in this area as such. A study of the extent of prior research on the issued related to the phenomenon under study has shown that the available doctrinal results are mostly represented by developments in the fi elds of environmental law, criminal law and criminalistics. However, it is obvious that the coverage of the radioecological safety crime issues in the national criminological literature is insuffi cient, since criminal activity in the fi eld of radioecological safety has not yet been studied and comprehended in terms of its nature, and its status and main trends have not been analyzed and the peculiarities of its determination have not been investigated, and this deprives the relevant law enforcement practice, as well as the preventive practice, of proper scientifi c and information support. The author notes that today’s scientifi c research on the phenomenon of crime in the fi eld of radioecological safety is interdisciplinary by nature. Some aspects of this issue are covered within various branches of science, and this creates the need for interdisciplinary integration of the results obtained in various areas of scientifi c knowledge. Criminology, which possesses the requisite methodological tools capable of meta-synthesizing the data from other sciences, can become the means for such unifi cation.
