Ukraine’s European choice in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war
Abstract. The article analyzes the problems and prospects for the implementation of Ukraine’s European choice in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. In particular, three of its important components are considered: intensification of the process of forming Ukrainian national identity as a factor of European worldview; affirmation of Ukraine’s subjectivity in the European integration process as an incentive for internal reform; establishment of practical, strategically defined feedback with the leadership and countries of the European Union. Conclusions are drawn regarding the acquisition of a new quality by Ukrainian society, which means its unity and uncompromising European orientation; stimulation of internal reforms under the influence of the intensification of the process of European integration of Ukraine; closer interaction of the leadership of Ukraine and official representatives of the EU in order to overcome Russian aggression, which threatens not only Ukraine, but also Europe as a whole.
The case of Ukraine shows that the successful transition of democratic countries in Europe requires the protection of geopolitical choice, democratic values, and national identity. Responding to this challenge, it is worth recalling the opinion expressed in the middle of the last century by the great Polish poet and thinker Czesław Milosz, who foresaw the possibility and necessity of forming a set of equal countries on the territory of a united Europe, capable not only of creating a certain integrity, but also of carefully preserving their identity. Ukraine’s struggle against absolute evil on the territory of Europe testifies that the world will never be the same again. The ruling class will no longer be able to make decisions arbitrarily, since at all levels there is a transition of power from traditional political elites to wider official circles. Not so long ago, it was impossible to force Europeans to tighten their belts, to limit themselves in something in the name of some goal. Today, from below, at the level of public consciousness, the idea is being formed that the price that must be paid together is the price of freedom and the preservation of democratic values. And it can be assumed that even after the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the European integration aspirations of Ukrainians will reliably block any temptations to slide towards authoritarianism. Accordingly, it is impossible to resist the evil that is multiplying and changing in the modern world without deepening, expanding and consolidating the efforts of a holistic geopolitical formation, which in the foreseeable future should include the European Union with Ukraine as its member. Certain aspects and the nature of the development of Ukraine’s European integration process require constant monitoring and adjustment, since this process will continue and unpredictable obstacles or, conversely, acceleration factors will arise from time to time on the path of Ukraine’s European choice, as evidenced, in particular, by the nature of the relations of the entire world community with the new US leadership.
