The “Ukrainian question” in Polish territorial projects at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries

Introduction. The problem of the formation of nation states in Eastern Europe, given the current geopolitical situation and challenges associated with the Russian-Ukrainian war, requires a certain rethinking, taking into account the achievements of modern historiography and the involvement of a wide range of sources from countries participating in national liberation struggles.

Results. The article examines Polish territorial programs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries through the prism of the scientific frontier concept as a tool for justifying statehood claims. It reveals the intellectual origins of this approach and shows its political and ideological conditioning, particularly in the interpretation of the eastern borders and the “Ukrainian question” using the example of the state territorial projects of Bolesław Wysłouch, Roman Dmowski, Eugeniusz Romer, Włodzimierz Wakara, and Leon Wasilewski. It is proven that the appeal to scientificity served as a form of legitimization of predetermined political goals, combining historical, ethnographic, and geopolitical arguments.

Conclusions. The analysis of Polish territorial programs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries shows that the concept of the “scientific frontier” became one of the key intellectual tools for legitimizing state claims during the period of political transformations in Central and Eastern Europe. Appealing to historical, ethnographic, geographical, and cultural arguments gave these programs an appearance of objectivity and rationality, while concealing their political and national-instrumental nature.
